When I studied with Maria Curcio in the 1980s, this was the first piece I was assigned. I subsequently played the prelude as my ‘signature piece’, the first in my ‘overture’ when I was the Musical Director for Newsrevue for a six week run. I also played it as part of my programme for a competition in Jaen and heard another performance that was much faster than mine. Neither of us made it through the first round, but we did become friends – possibly thanks to the G major prelude and fugue, book 1!
