In contrast to the preceding C sharp major prelude and fugue, the C sharp minor are much darker in feeling. The fugue, in 5 voices, has a sparse four note subject, starting in the lowest voice; just before half way a counter subject appears in the middle voice and the interplay between the original subject and this new one drives the music forward, each striving for supremacy.
